As with all engineering jobs at Vista, we employ engineers at multiple competency and experience levels. These include:
While there are certainly overlapping responsibilities within our engineering jobs, the requirements and expectations are different for each experience level. Following are the duties and experience expected for each level of the engineering job role. These expectations apply across all disciplines, including process engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, instrumentation & controls engineering, and piping engineering.
Engineer-in-Training
The engineer-in-training (EIT) will complete practical training in various phases of project-based engineering work. The EIT supports the design of different aspects of oil and gas projects from inception to completion.
EIT – Main Duties and Competencies:
- Assisting in the…
- development of process design for a project or proposal consisting of a normal process unit
- preparation of design specifications, computations, and drawings
- design of component parts and individual units
- Preparing design specifications, computations, and drawings; designing component parts and individual units
- Reviewing vendor or subcontractor quotations, drawings, and specifications for technical adequacy and conformance with project requirements
- Being able to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
- Performing other duties as requested
EIT – Requirements
- Zero (0) to five (5) years of progressive experience in facilities engineering and design in the oil and gas industry
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering or applied science
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including process, mechanical, civil structural, electrical, instrumentation & controls, and piping engineering
- Registered as an EIT with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
EIT – Preferred Experience
Two (2) to four (4) years of experience in an EIT capacity, ideally in the thermal heavy oil industry.
Engineering Specialist
The engineering specialist will participate in the design of different aspects of oil and gas projects from inception to completion. Duties will include a variety of challenging tasks.
Engineering Specialist – Main Duties and Competencies:
- Developing the process design for a project or proposal consisting of a normal process unit
- Providing comprehensive design services
- Establishing design criteria
- Implementing the preparation of specifications, design computations, drawings, models and bills of material in accordance with basic project requirements
- Participating in the design of component parts and individual units
- Exercising cost control, reviewing and monitoring designs for conformance with control estimates, and project specifications
- Reviewing vendor or subcontractor quotations, drawings, and specifications for technical adequacy and conformance with project requirements
- Providing technical guidance to junior staff
- Participating in design reviews and hazard and operability studies (HAZOPs)
- Preparing or assisting in the preparation of discipline inputs for cost estimates for proposals
- Applying advanced techniques and analyses to solving complex problems
- Being able to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
- Performing other duties as requested
Engineering Specialist – Requirements
- Four (4) to ten (10) years of progressive experience in facilities engineering and design in the oil and gas industry
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in engineering or applied science.
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including process, mechanical, civil-structural, electrical, instrumentation and piping engineers, and designers

- P.Eng. registration with APEGA
Engineer – Preferred Experience
Vista expects candidates for our engineering jobs to have at least two years of experience as a fully qualified engineer. Ideally, successful candidates will also have experience in thermal heavy oil.
Senior Engineer
A Senior Engineer will participate in the design of different aspects of oil and gas projects from inception to completion. These engineering job descriptions include a variety of challenging duties and tasks and are discipline-specific.
Senior Engineer – Main Duties and Competencies
- Developing the process design for a project or proposal consisting of a normal process unit
- Participating in the design of component parts and individual units
- Exercising cost control, and reviewing and monitoring designs for conformance with control estimates and project specifications
- Supervising the various activities involved in the process design of a project consisting of several complex process units
- Providing comprehensive engineering and design services
- Establishing design criteria and preparing specifications, design computations, drawings, models and bills of material in accordance with basic project requirements
- Performing detailed calculations
- Participating in design reviews and HAZOPs
- Interfacing with client representatives;
- Reviewing and maintaining project schedules, and tracking engineering tasks and deliverables in conjunction with project management
- Reviewing vendor or subcontractor quotations, drawings, and specifications for technical adequacy and conformance with project requirements
- Assigning and outlining work for others, and reviewing work for technical accuracy and adequacy
- Making recommendations concerning the selection, training, appraisal, and discipline of staff
- Reviewing the work of others
- Providing technical guidance to junior staff
- Preparing or assisting in the preparation of discipline inputs for cost estimates for proposals
- Applying advanced engineering techniques and analyses to complex engineering tasks
- Preparing engineering work packages and providing construction support
- Being able to meet safety requirements to attend site visits

Senior Engineer – Requirements
- At least seven (7) years of progressive experience in facilities engineering and design in the oil and gas industry
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in engineering or applied science
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including process, mechanical, civil-structural, electrical, instrumentation and piping engineers and designers
- Strong working knowledge and understanding of applicable codes and industry standards
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Self-motivated and efficient in time management and organizational skills
- Registration as P.Eng. with APEGA
Senior Engineer – Preferred Experience
Vista expects candidates for our senior engineering jobs to have at least eight years of experience as a fully qualified engineer. Ideally, successful candidates will also have five or more years of experience in thermal heavy oil.
Lead Engineer
Our engineering leads oversee a discipline engineering team in the design aspects of oil and gas projects from inception to completion. Duties will include a variety of challenging tasks and leadership requirements.
Lead Engineer – Main Duties and Competencies
- Establishing scopes of work for projects or proposals
- Scheduling and expediting department work
- Administering the planning, scheduling, cost control, and technical conformance to design during design phases of a project
- Reviewing and approving manpower requirements and exercising management responsibility with respect to selection, appraisal, and training of staff
- Providing specialist guidance in the design and delivery of complex engineering projects within their discipline
- Supervising an engineering team involved in the conception, planning, and development of engineering design, projects, processes, proposals, and estimates
- Guiding discipline team in accordance with the schedule and budget on assigned major projects of high technical complexity
- Coordinating activities with other departments and clients
- Reviewing and maintaining project schedule, engineering tasks, and deliverables in conjunction with project management
- Assisting in the negotiation of critical engineering issues
- Meeting frequently with clients to discuss projects
- Developing, implementing and maintaining existing and new design standards, guides and procedures
- Developing organization procedures, methods, and controls
- Assigning and reviewing work of subordinate design engineering staff
- Reviewing and approving manpower requirements and exercising management responsibility with respect to selection, appraisal, and training of staff

Lead Engineer – Requirements
- Ten (10) plus years of progressive experience in facilities engineering and design in the oil and gas industry
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in engineering or applied science
- Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including process, mechanical, civil-structural, electrical, instrumentation and piping engineers and designers
- Strong working knowledge and understanding of applicable codes and industry standards
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Self-motivation, the efficiency with time management and organizational skills
- P.Eng. registration with APEGA
Lead Engineer – Preferred Experience
Vista expects candidates for our lead engineering jobs to have at least twelve years of experience as a fully qualified engineer. Ideally, successful candidates will also have five years’ experience in thermal heavy oil. Additionally, Vista’s engineering leads should have three years of experience leading an engineering team in an EPC environment.
