Estimating Jobs in Calgary
Professional estimators interact with the engineering team and other departments to verify the integrity of data inputs and ensure no detail goes unaccounted for in a cost estimate. As with most jobs available with Vista, our estimating jobs are located in Calgary, Alberta, either at our head office or a nearby satellite office.

Estimator
Main Duties and Competencies
The estimator will develop and support cost control and project management systems, processes, resources, and tools. Key duties include:
- Working with the lead estimator to plan, estimate and control costs on projects
- Planning, scheduling and coordinating for timely delivery of capital estimates
- Delivering estimates for varying project sizes
- Estimating capital costs within work breakdown and coding structures
- Maintaining cost histories, commodity data management, and market tracking
- Estimating capital costs, budgeting, and forecasting
- Providing accurate financial control, analysis of drivers and timely reporting
- Analyzing risks to the project estimate and schedule
- Taking complete ownership and autonomy of work product, output, and recommendations
- Continuously interacting with Vista project managers to schedule and prioritize estimates
- Closely interacting with client corporate finance teams and project managers
- Assisting in the preparation of cost studies to assist in the selection of economical designs
- Preparing estimates for contract scope changes or extra work order
- Performing other duties as requested
Requirements
- High-school diploma or equivalent with a strong technical background
- Strong understanding of project cost estimation with superior analytical skills and expertise in financial analysis, modeling and budgeting methodologies
- Ability to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
- Advanced MS Excel skills to successfully analyze and interpret data
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering
- AACE accreditation (CCE/CCC/CCT)
- Five (5) years of cost estimation and control experience, focused on large-cap projects
- Experience working in oil and gas, particularly in well pads, pipelines and SAGD
- Focus on quality with acute attention to detail
- Strong communication and influencing skills
- Understanding of unit price development and benchmarking
Estimating Lead
Main Duties and Competencies
As a contributing member of the Project Services team, the lead estimator will be required to work closely with project managers to estimate work on project plans. This position will require a strong commitment to excellence in the development and support for cost control and project management systems, processes, resources, and tools. Key duties include:
- Leading, mentoring and building a high-performance team, including completing performance reviews
- Delivering estimates on projects of varying sizes
- Working with the project’s director to plan, estimate, and control costs on major SAGD heavy oil projects
- Planning and scheduling capital projects
- Estimating capital costs, budgeting, and forecasting
- Providing accurate financial control, analysis of drivers, and timely reporting
- Analyzing risks to project estimates and schedules
- Taking complete ownership and autonomy of work product, output, and recommendations
- Closely interacting with client corporate finance teams and project managers
- Periodically reviewing departmental process, procedures and standards, identifying areas of improvement, deficiencies and taking the necessary corrective action to maintain quality
- Planning, scheduling and managing responsibilities, objectives and project milestones for the team
- Managing team performance, including mentoring and coaching direct reports
- Providing input to, and participating in, Human Resources activities, including recruitment, terminations, and discipline
- Performing other duties as requested
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering
- At least seven (7) years of cost estimation and control experience working on large-cap projects
- Ability to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
- Experience on SAGD projects
- Strong understanding of project cost estimation with superior analytical skills and expertise in financial analysis, modeling and budgeting methodologies
- Advanced MS Excel skills to successfully analyze and interpret data
- Focus on quality with acute attention to detail
- Strong communication and influencing skills
Preferred
- AACE certification
- Ten (10) years of cost estimation and control experience on large-cap projects
