Project Controls Jobs in Calgary

Project controls professionals are specialized business analysts, trained to forecast risks, schedule changes, and planning requirements. At Vista, our project controls team interacts with the engineering team, drafting, and design team, and project services departments and includes a few different positions. As with most jobs available with Vista, our project controls jobs are located in Calgary, Alberta, either at our head office or a nearby satellite office.

Project Controls Analyst

Main Duties and Competencies

Project controls analysts maintain financial data, support the planners and schedulers, and provide checks and balances throughout the life of the project. Duties will include:

  • Preparing EP cost reporting
  • Cash flow development and reporting
  • Monitoring commitments, incurred and actual costs
  • Performing cost variance analysis
  • Earned value management reporting
  • Supporting estimate and budget development
  • Performing ad-hoc project analysis and support
  • Managing databases and generating reports
  • Performing other duties as requested

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (commerce, engineering, or similar)
  • Zero (0) to three (3) years of financial analysis experience
  • Understanding of project cost control fundamentals with analytical skills and experience in financial analysis, modeling and budgeting methodologies
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data
  • Ability to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
  • Advanced MS Excel skills
  • Quality focused with acute attention to detail
  • Strong communication and influencing skills

Preferred

  • Graduate degree in a related field (commerce, engineering, or similar)
  • Concentration in finance and accounting disciplines
  • Recognized designation (CMA, MBA, CFA, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Primavera P6 software
  • Strong background in the oil and gas industry

Planner/Scheduler

Main Duties and Competencies

The planner/scheduler will work closely with other groups, leaders and project managers to support effective and proactive control of project plans and schedules. This position will require a strong commitment to excellence in the development and support for cost control and project management systems, processes, resources, and tools. Duties will include:

  • Preparing (or assisting the preparation of) Level 1 to Level 3 EPC schedules in a sustaining capital project environment with particular emphasis on the critical path leading from engineering to procurement to construction
  • Leading and participating in interactive planning sessions, and holding meetings with project managers, estimators and engineers to review and adjust preliminary schedules for initial distribution
  • Coordinating the overall planning and scheduling activities on projects
  • Interfacing with engineering disciplines, project management and clients (if required) to ensure accurate engineering and procurement data is reflected in the schedules
  • Monitoring, reviewing, analyzing and reporting on the schedule status during all project phases
  • Performing manpower resource loading for assigned schedules and preparing histograms and other charts, as required
  • Managing project schedules, analyzing schedule variations and evaluating project trends and schedule forecasts
  • Analyzing risks to project schedules
  • Assisting in the preparation of schedule data for proposals or contracts
  • Assuming responsibility for the preparation, quality, and accuracy of project and proposal schedules
  • Performing in-depth what-if scenario analysis
  • Performing variance analysis
  • Performing logic analysis of schedules
  • Performing other duties as requested

Requirements

  • A recognized engineering or business degree, technical school diploma or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of EPCM planning and project reporting
  • Knowledge of procurement, contracts and construction management
  • Proficient with Primavera P6 software
  • Strong MS Excel skills for analysis and reporting
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong oral and written communication and influencing skills
  • Quality-focused with strong attention to detail while being able to maintain a ‘whole project’ perspective
  • Ability to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
  • 3 Preferred
  • Five (5) years or more of planning and scheduling experience in engineering, procurement, construction environment.
  • Field and construction planning experience
  • Knowledge of PertMaster is an asset
  • Background in heavy-oil/SAGD projects

Project Controls Lead

Main Duties and Competencies

The project controls lead is responsible for managing project controls deliverables on multiple projects and providing mentoring and training to a team of project controls schedulers, planners and estimators. The lead will be accountable for liaising with the client, engineering disciplines and providing guidance to the team. Duties will include:

  • Holding meetings with project managers, estimators and engineers to review and adjust preliminary schedules for initial distribution
  • Running and participating in interactive planning sessions
  • Analyzing schedule changes for impact on project
  • Reporting on impacts, critical areas and possible courses of action to maintain baseline schedule
  • Analyzing and reporting on schedule risks
  • Integrating risk management outputs in schedule review and mitigation planning
  • Resource load scheduling
  • Providing two-week schedule forecasts, reminding disciplines of deliverables that are due in one week and report to the PM/PE on the status of the deliverables on the due date
  • Identifying trends or scope changes and advise the PE’s and project controls
  • Cost reporting, earned value, change management and estimating
  • Cash flow development and reporting
  • Forecasting risk assessment requirements
  • Providing budget development support
  • Performing ad-hoc project analysis and support
  • Liaising between the client management team and engineering
  • Maintaining Primavera templates and scheduling standards
  • Creating preliminary schedule from historical data, document links, and assumptions, using Primavera software
  • Adjusting and reviewing schedules with project personnel and publishing baseline schedules
  • Progressing and updating the schedule bi-weekly with input from disciplines
  • Periodically reviewing departmental process, procedures and standards, identifying areas of improvement, deficiencies and taking the necessary corrective action to maintain quality.
  • Planning, scheduling and managing responsibilities, objectives and project milestones for the team
  • Managing the performance of the team, including mentoring and coaching direct reports
  • Providing input to, and participating in, Human Resources activities, including recruitment, terminations, and discipline
  • Performing other duties as requested

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Ability to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
  • Eight (8) years of planning and scheduling experience
  • Several years of leadership or management experience
  • Exceptional Primavera skills
  • Strong MS Excel skills for analysis and reporting
  • Focus on quality with strong attention to detail, while being able to maintain a “whole project” perspective
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to manage, motivate and mentor

Preferred

  • Field and construction planning experience
  • Graduate degree in a related field
  • Twelve (12) or more years of planning and scheduling experience in an engineering, procurement, construction environment
